Sanctification means being set apart by God for a holy purpose, for God’s exclusive use. While others are swept away by deception, believers are set apart by the Holy Spirit as God’s prized possession. Sanctification is not something people achieve through sheer willpower or rituals. It is an active, ongoing work of the Holy Spirit on believers. The Spirit renews believers, gives them the strength to live according to God’s words, and conforms them to the image of Christ.

Sanctification does not happen in a vacuum; it requires a response to God’s word, the truth. Paul explicitly couples “sanctification by the Spirit” with “belief in the truth.” The Holy Spirit uses the truth of the gospel to transform minds. It means true spiritual growth cannot be separated from believing and aligning with God’s word. Sanctification is the bridge between being chosen by God and final salvation, which is to share in the glory of Jesus Christ unto eternity.
