Thoughts on Today’s Reading
Grace, mercy and love from Christ to you.
While God desires our lives and worship, He aims at transforming hearts, not merely regulating behavior. However, sin’s corruption within humanity runs so deep that self-focus distorts even our best intentions. Religious observances, church attendance, service to others, and spiritual disciplines greatly contribute to our walk with the Lord but can easily be twisted to feed our sinful pride. As people with hearts set on serving God, we do well to guard against the constant siren call of the human flesh.
Overemphasis on outward spiritual rituals without a corresponding internal reality of true repentance and seeking God leads to empty formalities that exalt people rather than God. Therefore if we merely perform religious duties but continue to live as we please, instead of honoring God, we sadden God’s heart. God desires internal heart transformation over mere external behavior modification, seeking to replace hardened hearts with responsive ones through His Spirit.
