9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is He, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and He shall speak peace to the nations; His rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.— Zechariah 9:9-10
He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.
— Isaiah 2:4
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the chariots with fire.
— Psalm 46:9
And the LORD will be king over all the earth. On that day the LORD will be one and His name one.
— Zechariah 14:9
Thoughts on Today’s Reading
Grace, mercy and salvation from Christ to you.
Messiah’s second coming is the future return of Jesus Christ the King. These two presentations of the Messiah differ greatly in their purpose and posture. In His first coming, the Prince of Peace brought peace between God and man through His death and resurrection. When Christ returns, He will end the wars, judge His enemies and reign as King and bring peace to the entire earth. Under Christ’s reign, peace “will extend from sea to sea and from the River likely the [Euphrates] to the ends of the earth!
Zechariah 9:9 and 10 accurately prophesy and record Christ’s two comings. The prophesy of Christ’s first coming has been fulfilled around 2000 years ago when the daughters of Zion/Jerusalem shouted with joy at the righteous and just lowly Savior-King Jesus riding a donkey colt into Jerusalem. The prophecy of Jesus’s second coming will be fulfilled as well. At Christ’s second coming, He will bring all the wars to an end, He shall speak peace to the nations and His rule shall be from the River to the ends of earth.
