18 Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off

19 and said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.”

20 Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of Him may be before you, that you may not sin.”

— Exodus 20:18-20

The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to Him you shall listen—

— Deuteronomy 18:15

26 For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.

28 For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.

— Hebrews 7:26-28

Thoughts on Today’s Reading

Grace, mercy and love from Christ to you.

The Law, the 10 commandments, were given from God at Mount Sinai. The Law communicated reverence and was not whispered to the Israelites but with thunder. It was delivered in majesty and power, showing that God is utterly unlike impurity justice. We simply can not measure up His righteousness or whatsoever. We’re not meant to bridge the infinite gap between us and God. It prepares us to want grace and it makes us desires God‘s perfection and stop improving ourselves.

Finally the law exposes our need in Christ and it highlights the righteous characteristics of the Messiah. Christ never once broke the Law. Only Christ met all of the Law’s standards of righteousness. Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the Law. He fulfilled every part of the 10 Commandments. His obedience was flawless, making Him the perfect substitute and sacrifice for sinners.
