21b For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come from the law

22 But the Scripture pronounces all things confined by sin, so that by faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe.

— Galatians 3:21b-22

(for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.

— Hebrews 7:19

For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

— Romans 6:14

3 For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh,

4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

— Romans 8:3-4

Thoughts on Today’s Reading

Grace, mercy and love from Christ to you.

We are utterly incapable of doing works of the Law. This is why Jesus’s righteousness crediting to us by faith is our only hope. People might ask if the Law cannot save or justify us, does that at least give us life? The answer is no. The Law was not given to impart life. Life and righteousness given to us by Christ’s resurrection. Only our union with Christ brings us life and righteousness. The Spirit of the resurrected Christ, not the works of the Law makes us alive.

Hebrew 7:19 tells us: “(for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.”So if the Law couldn’t make us perfect, can it make us holy after salvation? The law was not given to set believers free from sin or make them holy in their Christian life. Roman 6:14 says, “For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.” Our sanctification is a work of grace through the Spirit not the Law.
