For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh,
— Romans 8:3
21 But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, as attested by the Law and the Prophets.
22 And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
24 and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
25 God presented Him as an atoning sacrifice in His blood through faith, in order to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance He had passed over the sins committed beforehand.
26 He did this to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and to justify the one who has faith in Jesus.
27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of works? No, but on that of faith.
28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the law.— Romans 3:21-28
Thoughts on Today’s Reading
Grace, mercy and love from Christ to you.
Regarding the Law, understanding we cannot do it is just as important as understanding that we can misapply the Law. While we might be used to false hope, spiritual exhaustion or a work base faith, here is a need to clarify what Scripture says about the Law. The Law was never intended to accomplish the work of saving sinners.
Romans 8:3 says, “For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh.”
The Law that condemns sin in the flesh is powerless to redeem because it was never meant to. The Law revealed our sinfulness, but it wasn’t the remedy. Imagine throwing a rulebook, instead of a lifeboat, at someone drowning in the Law! Jesus is the lifeboat! He does not diagnose our issue. He delivers us.
