So then, it does not depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.

— Romans 9:16

I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

— 1 John 5:13

And when He [the comforter, the Spirit] comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

— John 16:8

21 Surely you heard of Him and were taught in Him—in keeping with the truth that is in Jesus—

22 to put off your former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;

23 to be renewed in the spirit of your minds;

24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

— Ephesians 4:21-24

Thoughts on Today’s Reading

Grace and mercy from Jesus Christ to you.

If salvation depends on our fluctuating obedience, we then live life and face eternity without the assurance of salvation that God intends for believers. Conviction of sin, responsiveness to God’s Word, and heart-driven obedience to His commands reveal the transforming work of God’s Spirit within believers like us. God holds fast those who belong to Him. True believers seek God, turn often to Him in repentance, and trust His unfailing care as a source of comfort and security.

Believers’ eternal security rests on God’s power and faithfulness, not our own. Though our ongoing internal battle with sin can be discouraging, God’s redemptive word can be trusted. God’s children persevere in faith because He is strong. We are greatly comforted to know that God’s coming judgment cannot threaten our eternal position as His children. The God who planned and orchestrated our salvation through His Son will bring believers to the glorious eternity He has promised. Hallelujah!
