8 All things are wearisome, more than one can describe; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear content with hearing

14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun, and have found them all to be futile, a pursuit of the wind.

17 So I set my mind to know wisdom and madness and folly; I learned that this, too, is a pursuit of the wind.

— John 7:37

For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living water, and they have dug their own cisterns—broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

Thoughts on Today’s Reading

Grace and mercy from Jesus Christ to you!

Why do people always feel discontented? Why do people always strive for relief from the restless void that lurks deep within? As we grow up, we pursue fulfillment through many things. As adults, we think if only we have more of this or that, we will finally quench our thirst and ease our fears of not measuring up. But inevitably, we find ourselves disappointed, disillusioned and exhausted. Where does true satisfaction lie?

One time a thirsty, exhausted and shunned Samaritan woman encountered Jesus by a well. Jesus gently exposed her sin that made her truly thirsty and Jesus offered her a powerful solution. Jesus invited her to drink from His spring of living water that would quench her every thirst and would never run dry. Jesus offers this same living water to all who come to Him. Only Jesus can fully satisfy our deepest longings. Nothing in this world will ever be enough. When we seek fulfillment in Christ, we can experience freedom and satisfying fellowship with Him.
