“1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea

2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.’ ”

11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

— Matthew 3:1-3; 11

“27 John [the Baptist] replied, “A man can receive only what is given him from heaven.

28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but am sent ahead of Him.’

29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom stands and listens for him, and is overjoyed to hear the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.

30 He must increase; I must decrease.”

— John 3:27-30

Thoughts on Today’s Reading

Grace and peace from God to you!

John the Baptist was a forerunner in the wilderness calling people to repent and turn to Jesus the Messiah who was to come after him. He replied to people that Jesus, the Son of God, the Messiah, must increase and become greater but he himself must decrease and become less. His wise and humble reply proves his godliness, surrender, and God’s purpose for all believers. He recognized the truth: It’s all about God’s Son—Jesus.

John the Baptist contentedly focused on the work God had given him. He repeatedly confirmed that he was not the Messiah. He rejoiced when Jesus the true Bridegroom made Himself known to the people. John the Baptist remained clear about his place and purpose—God called him to point out and make way for the One who came to save the world. His role was to be a friend who brings to the Bridegroom the bride—God’s people, the church. John’s calling is also our calling. There is no higher calling than leading others to Jesu.
